Pedagogy for JHS & SHS – Unit 1 to 3

Course Description

This course is designed to provide learners with a solid understanding of the core concepts of methodology, pedagogy, and andragogy, and how these concepts apply to effective teaching and learning, particularly at the Junior High School (JHS) and Senior High School (SHS) levels. It equips participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical classroom strategies needed to deliver engaging, learner-centered instruction in secondary education.

The first part of the course introduces the fundamental concepts of pedagogy and andragogy, highlighting their meanings, purposes, and differences. Learners will explore various types of pedagogy and examine how common pedagogical approaches—such as discussion-based learning—can be effectively applied in real classroom situations. Emphasis is placed on helping participants clearly distinguish between teaching children and adolescents versus teaching adults and understanding how these differences influence instructional decisions.

The second part of the course focuses on secondary school pedagogy, with practical examples of teaching methods appropriate for JHS and SHS learners. Participants will study commonly used instructional strategies such as lecture, discussion, think-pair-share, group and pair work, demonstration, and simulation. The course examines the key principles (tenets) of each method, along with their advantages and limitations, enabling teachers to make informed instructional choices.

In addition, learners will be guided to analyze critical factors that influence the selection of teaching methods, including lesson objectives, subject content, students’ characteristics, class size, classroom environment, and availability of instructional materials. Through illustrations and classroom-based examples, participants will learn how to effectively apply these pedagogical methods to enhance student participation, understanding, and academic performance in secondary schools.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to confidently select, justify, and apply appropriate pedagogical approaches to meet the diverse learning needs of students at the JHS and SHS levels.
