About Course

Course Description

Foundations of Early Childhood Education is a comprehensive course designed to prepare prospective teachers for the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (Early Childhood). The course introduces learners to the Early Childhood profession, its nature, relevance, goals, and dimensions, and examines the key theories and philosophies that inform contemporary Early Childhood Education (ECE) practices.

Learners will develop a strong understanding of the personal, educational, professional practice, and public dimensions of the ECE profession, as well as the historical and contemporary views of the child. The course also highlights the roles and good practices of key stakeholders, including teachers, caregivers, and parents, in supporting young learners’ holistic development.

In addition, the course explores the ideas and principles of major educational thinkers such as John Dewey, Lev Vygotsky, Jean Piaget, Maria Montessori, Erik Erikson, Howard Gardner, Friedrich Froebel, Abraham Maslow, Elizabeth Peabody, and Alcott Hault, and demonstrates how their theories shape modern Early Childhood teaching and learning.

Through structured units, exam-focused content, and practical applications, learners will gain the knowledge and skills required to answer GTLE questions confidently, apply child-centred teaching approaches, and uphold professional standards in Early Childhood Education.
