Tourism, leisure, and entrepreneurship play very important roles in Ghana’s socio-economic development. Tourism promotes national unity, creates employment, generates foreign exchange, and preserves cultural heritage. Leisure contributes to physical and mental wellbeing, while entrepreneurship develops creativity, innovation, and self-employment. Financial management supports business sustainability and personal economic stability.

This module equips teacher trainees with knowledge and practical skills needed to understand tourism, develop entrepreneurial attitudes, and manage finances responsibly.


UNIT 8.1: TOURISM AND LEISURE


Meaning of Tourism

Tourism refers to the movement of people from their usual place of residence to another place for recreation, business, education, or cultural purposes for a limited period, not exceeding one year.

Tourism involves:

  • Travel

  • Temporary stay

  • Recreational or educational activities

  • Spending money at the destination

In Ghana, tourism includes visits to historical sites, cultural festivals, beaches, wildlife reserves, and heritage centers.

Types of Tourism

  1. Domestic tourism – Ghanaians travelling within Ghana

  2. International tourism – foreigners visiting Ghana

  3. Cultural tourism – festivals, traditions, heritage

  4. Eco-tourism – wildlife and natural attractions

  5. Educational tourism – study tours and excursions


Meaning of Leisure

Leisure refers to free time activities people engage in voluntarily for rest, enjoyment, relaxation, or personal development after work or school.

Examples of leisure activities include:

  • Watching movies

  • Reading

  • Listening to music

  • Visiting friends

  • Sightseeing

Leisure promotes:

  • Physical health

  • Mental relaxation

  • Social interaction

Many tourist sites lack good roads, electricity, clean water, and modern accommodation. This discourages visitors.


2. Inadequate Funding

Tourism development requires heavy investment. Limited government funding slows development of tourist facilities and marketing.


3. Poor Marketing

Many tourist attractions in Ghana are not properly advertised locally and internationally. This reduces tourist awareness.


4. Security Concerns

Tourists need safe environments. Theft, harassment, and poor emergency services discourage tourism.

Qualities of an Entrepreneur

A successful entrepreneur possesses the following qualities:
